The Last Night

The last night of my twenties was spent quietly, at home. I stopped by Sticky Fingers Bakery on the way home from work, picked up some sweets. Stopped by The People Garden and got some bread and had a carbohydrate feast when I got home. ;-)

I have said for ages that I am looking forward to thirty, and I still am. The one odd thing is the expectation that somehow I should act more mature or something simply because of the number change, when I don't necessarily feel any more mature than I did before.

I think silly things when left alone.

So, no big bang to show out the twenties. No last trick over to take it out by way of sex, either. ;-) Just wanted a quiet night to goof off at home, nothing planned, and some good, simple food for dinner. And I got that. Which is good, because tomorrow will be eating out with Richard, plus most likely a (non-vegan) cake at work, so I needed simply this evening to make up for that.

Food fest here we come!

The Day After

02/10/4 8:38 a.m.

Well, the day itself is over and done with. Now to get through the public celebration and all will be back to normal. Whee!

Lovely dinner at City Lights last night with Richard. He offered fancy but I went for comfort. Especially as I wasn't sure where my stomach was going to be later in the evening, post cake from the office.

We do a "birthday club" thing at work. The way it works is that you purchase the birthday cake or bagels or what not for the next's person's birthday (so I'll be getting stuff for someone next week). Well, the previous birthday girl asked what kind of cake and I left it up to her, since I really view these as something more for the office as a whole than for me individually. Mistake.

I walked into the room and fully realized how much this woman does not know about me. Now, I figured on a normal butter laden thing so I brought pills to fortify my stomach, but when I walked in, there were two gorgeous cheesecakes sitting there.

Now, of all the cakes there are, this was not what I expected. I popped no fewer than six lactaid ultra pills, and they did keep it pretty steady. But the worst part was the waiting dread over what might come to pass, and that dread so outweighed the temporary taste of the cheesecake. Polite excuses or a gentle steering toward Sticky Fingers will have to be the norm from now on, I think.

Weekend

The party went well. Had a full crowd, some folks brought guests, which was great (new people! *grin*). The mix was just right, and I didn't have to separate anyone over the political discussions (ah, the joys of having friends from a variety of political parties), and overall the guests seemed to enjoy themselves. Very low key, which was what I wanted.

The cakes were excellent. One chocolate with raspberry filling, one strawberry shortcake style. Of course I have too much left over (what is this fear of running out of things that I have that I always buy too much?!?!). Received a few more gifts, and I need to sit down today and write out thank you cards (if I have cards - need to hunt those down...). A couple more cookbooks this time around, and a mess of fresh basil that shall become dinner this evening (fresh pesto! hooray!), as well as the usual moose-related stuff. ;-)

Cleaned yesterday, and picked up the cakes, as well as groceries and liquor. The day started out kinda blah, feeling like I had a hangover, even though I'd not touched a drop the evening before. I suspect it was leftover crud from the cheesecake and a low pressure system coming over. After a late-morning run I felt much, much better, and the bike rides to the various stores helped as well. This is the other reason why I need to run - I feel sooooooo much better when I do.

Richard and I have said we're going to work on diet and exercise consistency together for the next while, until it becomes ingrained habit again. Of course, the day was still started with sticky buns from sticky fingers, but hey. ;-) We had the soup I made last night, which definitely fit the parameters of the diet, for lunch, and I'm thinking a bike ride may be in order this afternoon, just around my district so I can get addresses for a potential political mailing.

Richard is fixing the seat and pads on my computer chair, so I'm trying to adjust to using one of my dining chairs at the computer. It doesn't feel right. ;-) I've had this "back chair" of my mother's at the computer for so long that it doesn't feel entirely right to be at a regular chair here at home. The chair in question is one of those "back chairs" that came out in the late 70s, early 80s where there's a seat and pads on which you rest your knees. It helps keep you sitting upright, and thereby help your posture and your back. Mine rocks, as in it rocks back and forth, which I've always loved. The cushions have been dying for years now, and Richard finally took pity on me and is putting some new padding and cloth on them for me. He so spoils me, and I still fail to see what I do to deserve the treatment.

Food & Health

Today's lesson, boys and girls, was to listen to your body and not eat if it says don't eat, even if it's the social time to do so.

No, didn't go puke up or anything, but was decidedly uncomfortable all afternoon. Leftover pesto (which was sooooooo yummy) and leftover cake (which was also yummy) for lunch, and way, way, too much of both. This whole social training you go through when you're young to eat everything on your plate. *shudder* Blech. So I did, and was uncomfortable because of it most of the afternoon/early evening. I didn't eat dinner, just had some adult Tang and some peppermint herbal tea to help settle things, and am sipping a mug of ginger tea now to keep the settling effect going.

And I'm hoping the slight heartburn earlier was the result of overindulgence and not the beginnings of acid reflux, which runs in the family (grandfather, mother, brother...). Whee! Of course, they were all younger than I am now when theirs started, so let's hope it stays that way.

Natasha is staring at me like I'd make a good meal. Silly beastie.

(and that would be the moment when he lost the train of thought and watched it crash and burn. poor man.)

Am headed to bed at a decent hour so I can go running in the morning tomorrow. Today was the typical Monday morning after not being able to sleep on Sunday because the head is racing too much with thoughts about work and what not, so I slept in slightly and got the weight routine in. Now that cake is rapidly disappearing from the place (two slices left, which may get frozen for much, much later...), 'tis time to knuckle down on the exercise and diet and get them back to the sensible norm from which I've strayed.

Two new things today (past the overindulgence). First, I got new jewelry (and put pics of it in the pics section) for the Prince Albert, and second, I went the entire day without a watch.

Decided that the skin on my wrist needed to breathe for a few days, so am trying watchless living for a bit. It's not like I can't tell the time regularly - there are oodles of clocks around, and in a pinch the cell phone has one I can use. The skin feels good not being cooped up, and I didn't miss the watch but occasionally when I would glance down in the hallway (usually wondering when lunch was *groan*). Will see how long I can stand it and go with it then.

Though most days I consider the watch a fashion accessory, and treat it accordingly. ;-)

Anyway, off to bed early to get up and run off this cake. Have to buy two more tomorrow for the next birthday in the office, so there will be more of it tomorrow afternoon. Oy.

Schedule

02/10/8 5:54 p.m.

Switched my hours (or, rather, started the process to do so) back by a half hour since I am perpetually unable to get in by 9. Won't change my routine all that much, but it will relieve stress in the morning around my reporting time.

Also printed more job announcements this afternoon in one of my, "they're dicking around with me too much" moods. Hell, I talked with our General Counsel six months ago, and still no action. I know we move slowly, but give me a break, they should at least be able to say where in the works it is, if it is at all. I hate being in limbo, especially for that long. Now the challenge is to maintain the momentum and get these aps in next week.

Am biking to Richard's place this evening, then biking to work tomorrow. First time in ages, and heaven knows I need the exercise. Have to remember to drag a towel back with me as I brought it home to wash last time I was in.

Metro Cruising

02/10/10 9:14 a.m.

Took MetroRail today and this guy across from me is cruising hard. I, of course, am cruising right back (than heavens I know Graffiti well enough to keep writing while I look around - something that disturbs many people as they see me looking while my stylus continues to move). Gotta love it.

Curly brown hair, glasses, early 30s maybe. Totally my "type," if you will. Cute, if tentative smile. Fabulous jaw line (as he leans over - not enough sleep?).

Heavens, but I love this game.

Luggage Shopping

02/10/19 10:41 a.m.

Luggage gave out on this last trip to St. Louis so Richard & I are headed via Metrorail & Metrobus out to Tyson's Corner to hit the L.L. Bean store. Whee! Is an adventure as neither of us has attempted to get out to the outer malls via public transit. So far, so good.

The trip itself was fine, and I'm headed back there tomorrow evening (hence the necessary shopping trip instead of having it shipped to me at no cost and no tax). I'm actually enjoying the chance to get out into the field for a bit - that always helps when dealing with them. This week is establishing a new filing system and training a new hire who starts on Monday. It'll be nuts, but worth the brownie points.

And traveling at someone else's expense is always nice.

Missed

02/10/28 6:27 p.m.

Missed a whole ton of entries the past month. Being out of town for two weeks didn't help any, either. I'll post the back entries, but they're badly out of date, of course.

On my way to The People Garden to look for snacks and to ask them about their Community Supported Agriculture program. They've had a "ask us" sign up, but I've never done so and I'd like to do so. The idea of regular, pre-paid shipments of organic veggies next year is an appealing one.

So I survived the first day back without any bloodshed. Was harried, as expected, but not overly so. I hesitate to think what it would be like if I was actually gone for a decent vacation, though.

Not Giving Up

Felt guilty about not writing, though I did post some shorter entries I've had stored on my Palm the past month. I suppose the new start at the gym (where I discovered it's been not quite a year since the last time I did weights - yikes!) has given me renewed vigor to write here. The sense of purpose in my campaign has also given me something to think about and do in that arena, which is always a good thing. A way to go, things to do, and not just sitting and waiting is always a better course for me (externally imposed deadlines and all that, you know).

I accepted my first campaign contributions this evening. It feels strange to say that, but it happened. Will mean I can do a few more posters and handouts for the polls, which is a good thing. I hate to gloat, but it was nice to see that the posters my opponent has put up were drooping pretty badly in the rain and don't look likely to last out this current storm wave. My own will go up this weekend and not before, as will the notices to slip on/under doors.

So, doing pretty well this week. Not catching the cold that's going around (I had it already?), been exercising. Will be mildly sore from the gym but not too bad (cut the reps in 1/2 for each set and only 2 sets per exercise, at lower weights), should be able to keep getting in a run or two this week. Life seems to be going well. Now to get through next Tuesday and I'll be much better.

Cold

Last night was a night out with the girls, even though the Drag Race didn't happen (damned rain). We stayed out a little late, so I just slept in this morning. Well, that and it was rainy and icky and cold and wet and I was feeling wimpy about going out in it. :-p

Was not ready for the cold today. I mean, I bundled up and I was perfectly warm in my jacket and what not, but mentally I was not ready for it. It was just too soon after all the moderate weather we've been having, ya know?

Left work on a good note - I cleaned out my inbox, realized my "to file" box is now full so I have no choice but to put it all away, and generally got things cleaned off my desk so I have space in which to work. Next will have to be the almost 400 messages in my email inbox. *shudder* Let's hope that one goes quickly. Can't believe I let it get that bad, but it has. So was terribly perky, despite the rain, when I left work (late) because all was in order there.

Took another campaign contribution tonight. Woo-hoo! It still feels strange actually saying that, but that's the truth of it. Will help get most of the posters I have to get printed, so is "all good" as friends would say.

The fun thing about pulling out the winter jacket is discovering the things inside. This one had gloves, an ear protector, a bag of bus tokens, and a gift I'd bought for Peter last winter before we had an address to which I could ship things. Will get that out to him post-haste. I'm surprised I didn't find lip balm in there, since I tend to leave at least one tube of the stuff in each of my jackets, so I have some whenever I'm out and about. That'll have to get fixed.

Going to bed a little early tonight so I can (snuggle up with Richard) get to the gym tomorrow morning. Got the momentum started, so let's keep it going.

Election Update

Well, several developments this evening.

First, I got my campaign posters and they look tres snazzy. If I get the chance, I'll post one online.

Second, my lost cell phone charger is back in my possession so I can use my phone again.

Third, I have clean laundry and vacuumed the floor (cleaning always lifts my mood; once it's done, that is).

Fourth, I met my opponent this evening.

It happened quite by accident. I was headed down to get my laundry and saw a woman I worked with last summer on the redistricting committee. She was headed in with another woman and a young man with whom I had spoken at the last ANC meeting in September. She introduced us, and as I suspected he was my opponent.

Let's just say, if this were the Miss American pageant, I'd have the swimsuit portion by a mile. Nice guy, but I'm definitely cuter (and more egotistical?). Slicked back dark hair, not the best complexion, heavyset (and not even a good bearish heavyset). And to answer someone else's question, no, I've not slept with him. :-p

The moment when she introduced us was, of course, awkward. Am happy to say I reached out first to shake his hand and say what a pleasure it was to see him again. Thankfully laundry called, so I had an excuse to get away fairly quickly.

The encounter left me feeling much better about the whole thing; not knowing who your opponent is always makes them super-human, you know? Now that I have a better vision of the competition, and I know I measure well against him, so 'twas a nice point in the evening.
