Working Up

04/7/3 11:14 a.m.

Nice Saturday so far. Got up to go swim. Got there a little later than I'd have liked, and so was little more tired than I should have been. Did 10 50s and called it quits. Ran into a guy that used to work for the People Garden, and I think I saw one of the guys who lives in my neighborhood. Was a good swim, if short.

I went ahead and joined DCAC, gave them a check this morning. I need the help, and I'm enjoying the limited bit of community I'm getting out of it thus far. Is good to be working out with group, too. I did mention that I need some technical help, and I might be able get that next time, but I need to get there earlier and have some more time to rest before we get going.

Work was just a mess. I now wish I'd just done the 5x a week, 4 week grand jury plan instead of 3x8. Two more weeks to go, and then done, done, done! I look forward to the return to normal.

I think the 5x a week exercise schedule is going to be fine, once I adapt to it. I enjoyed biking to and from work on Thursday, and that will likely will be the majority of my bike training from now on - the commute to and from other things. That's not a bad plan right now, and it'll work in more bike training than I'd be able to work in otherwise (as well as more swimming and running). Have been a bit more tired this week because of the ramp up, which is not a bad thing. I'll do a bit more ramping up this next week, then drop back for an active rest week the next one after that. Then the lockers will be open again at work and I'll be able to start biking in again.

Now I need to work on my diet. I've been gradually reducing my caffeine again, going to smaller sizes and decaf versus mega-huge full-test. I've not been eating as well as I can, and eating out far too much. The curse of the modern American diet.

...

04/7/4 12:51 p.m.

The diet thing hit home this morning. I ran in the park this morning and it was evident how much more difficult it is to run with an extra twenty pounds or so. I'd do well to lose at least fifteen, take myself back into the low 150s, and even better if 148 or so were the goal. Mustering the willpower to stop myself from eating so much is the difficult part.

I've been in a "listen to your body and feed it when it wants" mode that's not working. My body seems to want to keep weight at a certain level and eats accordingly. My weight has at least been steady at 168 for the past two months or so, with no gains unlike the previous six. The ankle really screwed things up there, and getting sorted out is not as easy as I expected it to be.

...

That was two entries I wrote over the weekend on the Palm. I'm doing more reading on training, looking into more things I need/want to do to get where I want to be, eventually (Ironman!). While the larger goal is always in mind, right now I need to just focus on what I can do in the here and now to get closer to that larger goal. Small steps, big impact.

Exhausted

Tired, tired, tired, and not in a good way. The AC is still on the fritz, and it was HOT AS HADES yesterday in the apartment. Which meant the usual "Sunday" night jitters plus heat equaling very little sleep. Swam this morning, but cut it short at the end and got out. The damned thing had better be fixed and soon, or the Housing Department gets a call.

Richard and I passed a relationship milestone today: I did a combined batch of our laundry. It was probably cheaper than doing it separately, and he was out of the house, so the laundry I had stacked up yesterday to do (unsuccessfully) was done this afternoon when I got out of the jury. So far nothing seems to be missing and he didn't complain about the folding job, so it seems we passed this one with flying colors. Which is good, because I'm not in the mood to deal with bitchiness tonight. ;-)

Wishes

First, the AC is working. They had to pump an additional 1,100 gallons of whatever they're using for freon these days into the system because of a leak, but the second compressor is up and running and the building is cool once again. Yay.

Second, they came and dusted/sprayed in the kitchen for bugs. This is a good thing, and a planned thing, and we emptied (well, I emptied) the kitchen to prepare for it. So the entire kitchen is in the living room, save what's in the fridge. We're going to put it back this weekend, and use the opportunity to cull and inventory what we have. We're also going to head to Ikea and look for a side table to replace one or both of the tables we have in there now for storage.

I decided, since I did the math and will not have enough cash to get the iBook at this point, then I'm going to get some other needed things from my wish list (clothes, athletic stuff, etc.). I'll still bank some of the funds, but I'm going to get some needed things as well. And some of that may be some furniture, if I find what I'm wanting.

Sleep has been messy. I gave up caffeine last Thursday (last Wednesday was the last coffee), with one slip for iced tea yesterday. Don't want it in my system, don't need it, and going to work to get rid of it again. As I recall it takes really 2-3 months to get all of the effects out of your system, but I also recall that it was worth being free of the stuff. So, into that territory once again.

The grand jury wrapped up on Wednesday, so but for the two recall days in two and four weeks, I'm done with that. Hooray! Am so looking forward to real work weeks again. And I've already got the assignments to match the time. Wish I could go into detail, but alas, such is the secrecy at a Big Government Agency that it's unmentionable. Suffice to say it's big.

Otherwise I continue to run and swim when I can. I'll be able to start biking in again next week, so that'll be added to the mix shortly. I'm making progress on the swimming (not so much on the running, but I have further to go in swimming, so progress is easier), which pleases me. Hopefully I'll keep working up to the longer distances with the repeats. It'll get there.

Food, food, food

Today was destined to be all about food.

We went grocery shopping yesterday, Richard and I, after I carved my way through the coupons and a couple cookbooks looking for things to try. Got the vast majority of the ingredients then, with a few things in reserve for a trip to Whole Paycheck Foods for me this evening.

Got up this morning and threw together the stuff for Sweet and Spicy Lentil Chili in the slow cooker. Went running, got back, got cleaned up, headed out the door and turned on the slow cooker. Hooray for dinner waiting when you get home.

I zipped to Whole Foods after work and picked up the remainder of the ingredients, plus other staples we like to spoil ourselves with. The total was within $5 of the trip to Safeway the previous day, which had been 5 bags worth of groceries to the two I got at Whole Foods. Yikes.

I was good and refrained from picking up any more sweets. I had bought cookies at Safeway, but when I saw they were 190 calories for three cookies (?!?!?!?!), they've been rationed. Thankfully we have these tiny containers that hold exactly three cookies, so that's all I get at work.

So, got home, the chili was ready. Turned that off, washed baby spinach and made some salad dressing. Got out the rosemary bread and some olive oil, and set the table for a nice, sit down meal. So much better than we've been doing the past few weeks.

After that was done and the dishes were washed, I whipped up a cold cucumber, cilantro and lime soup to chill overnight for tomorrow's dinner. Was going to make some muffins, too, but the muffin tin was icky and in need of serious cleaning, so that got done instead. Yuck.

So we're set for a while. Will take lunch in tomorrow and be healthier than my usual burrito in the cafeteria at work. Leftovers are a good thing, at least for lunches.

Ickies/Massage

04/7/22 7:04 p.m.

Been dealing with what I'm calling "grand jury ickies" the past two days. I blame a persistent low-grade sore throat over the past week or so on all those hacking people from the grand jury. It finally got bad enough that I went in to see the doc yesterday afternoon. He decided to clean out my system, since it could conceivably be an STD as well, so one shot, one HIV/Syphilis screening and a 10 day prescription of doxycycline later, the throat is starting to fade, along with anything and everything else, good and bad, that could be living in my system. Whee.

So, stayed home from work the past two days to deal with this and get non-infectious again. Fun. Of course the ABs are throwing off my system, but I'm weathering it. Will likely run tomorrow morning, with few if any side effects.

...

8:57 p.m.

Much better. I just got my first professional massage from my friend MT. I'm much more relaxed, much more comfortable in my skin. I've got two big knots, one in either shoulder, and it would likely take a whole other session just to get rid of those, but we did what we could. I did have to stifle giggles when he worked on my thighs - those were just too sensitive. Otherwise it went fine. He didn't do my hands or my face, and stayed well away from my crotch, which was fine. This'll have to be a regular monthly thing, I think. It'll definitely make me feel better, and work out the tensions from work and exercise.
